# Sunset Stories: The Faces of Pier 60

## A Portrait Series Celebrating The Faces of Clearwater Beach

Every evening as the sun sets over the Gulf, Pier 60 transforms into an open-air theater. This intimate portrait series captures the artists, musicians, and performers who bring this beloved Clearwater Beach tradition to life — photographed like actors on a stage, spotlit against the golden hour sky.

## About This Series

"Pier 60 isn't just a location — it's a stage where art, culture, and community come together every sunset."

For years, I've walked past the talented performers who make Pier 60's nightly sunset celebration something special. These artists pour their hearts into their craft, creating moments of joy and wonder for thousands of visitors. I wanted to honor them by capturing their artistry with the same level of intention and drama they bring to their performances.

This personal project became a study in theatrical lighting and environmental portraiture — treating each performer as the star of their own stage, frozen in a moment that celebrates both their individual personality and the collective spirit that defines Pier 60.

### 🎭 The Theatrical Approach

Using a gridded flash to overpower the ambient sunlight, I created dramatic spotlight effects that isolated each performer against the backdrop of the Gulf Coast sky. The technique mimics stage lighting — a narrow, focused beam that highlights the subject while letting the environment fade into a supporting role. It's photography as theater: intentional, dramatic, and deeply respectful of the artistry these performers bring to Clearwater Beach every single evening.

## The Performers

Each portrait captures the unique personality and artistry of the talented individuals who make Pier 60's sunset celebration an unforgettable Tampa Bay tradition.

## Behind the Technique

Creating these portraits required balancing natural sunset light with powerful artificial lighting to achieve that signature "stage spotlight" effect. The gridded flash allowed precise control over light direction and falloff, ensuring each performer stood out dramatically against the ambient environment while maintaining the warm, golden quality of Florida's Gulf Coast sunset.
